Art, Beach & Relaxation Great Barrier Island

Take a day to enjoy art and relaxation on Great Barrier Island.

Great Barrier Island is an “off the grid” solar powered island and a unique experience looking at New Zealand as it was in the 1950’s.  You can relax on pristine beaches, walk restful tracks and visit artists.

You could also enjoy yoga, Chi Gong or Shinrin-Yoku, ring in advance to book – their numbers are below.

Have a look at the choice of artist or gallery to visit, all are located in the Tryphena or Claris areas. Along this route you will see gorgeous white sand beaches to stop, rest, walk or swim (Medlands Beach is one to walk along), ask someone and find the mermaid pool. Tryphena has a café for lunch or coffee or purchase food and drink at Stonewall Store, which is next to the café.

We suggest you phone the places you choose to visit before you leave Auckland, let them know you are coming. Feel free to ask anyone on the island to help you with directions, there are no entry fees.

Located on left side of main route down the hill into Tryphena, look for a sign at gate with a long steep driveway, low gear needed here.

Overview: ‘In 2003 my work changed dramatically as I began using recycled copper as a medium for sculptural weaving. Thus followed a period of experimenting with the malleability and strength of the copper as I explored different techniques with how it could be shaped, moulded, and oxidised. I was invited to exhibit work at exhibitions in Scotland and Spain, and travelled in Denmark. Working from my Woven Design Studio on Great Barrier Island I continue developing copper sculptural pieces for galleries throughout New Zealand, commissions, and working towards exhibitions.’

Overview: ‘Sarah’s studio in Shoal Bay is easily found near the Tryphena Wharf nestled amongst Nikau and fern alongside a gentle stream home to hundreds of tiny glow worms. In her studio Sarah throws pots and runs two gas kilns and a wood fired kiln, producing a wide range of domestic ware, tile work and hand built sculptures.’

‘We have over 100 artists creating work for our Gallery. All our artists have strong Barrier connections, making us unique and showing a beautiful reflection of Barrier life. We pride ourselves on enabling everyone to experience art, so visiting the exhibitions and Gallery is free. We have artwork for sale created by those just beginning, to others who have been honing their skills for years.
